Why We Built FoodLink: The Story Behind Malaysia's First AI Delivery Robot

FoodLink started with a simple question: what if restaurants never had to worry about staffing again? Here's how the FL1 robot came to be.

Why We Built FoodLink: The Story Behind Malaysia's First AI Delivery Robot

Every restaurant owner in Malaysia knows the pain. You open at 10am, and by 11:30 your WhatsApp is blowing up: "Boss, I can't come in today." One staff calls in sick, another quit without notice, and now your lunch rush is short-handed. Again.

We lived this reality. We saw restaurant owners across KL, Penang, and JB burning out, not because their food was bad or their locations were wrong, but because they simply could not find enough people to run the floor.

The staffing problem is getting worse

Malaysia's F&B industry faces a structural labor shortage. Minimum wage increases, a shrinking pool of foreign workers, and young Malaysians choosing gig economy jobs over restaurant work. The result: restaurants paying more for fewer, less reliable staff.

We talked to dozens of restaurant owners. The same story came up every time: "I spend more time managing staff problems than running my business."

What if a robot could do the running?

Not replace humans entirely. Not some sci-fi fantasy. Just a practical, plug-and-play robot that handles the repetitive work: carrying food from kitchen to table, running drinks, clearing trays. The tasks that don't need a human touch but eat up most of your floor staff's time.

That's what became the FL1.

What makes FL1 different

We designed the FL1 specifically for Malaysian restaurants:

  • No renovation required. No ceiling QR codes, no floor tracks, no infrastructure changes. The FL1 uses LiDAR SLAM navigation and works in any space wider than 46cm.
  • It pays for itself. The FL1 isn't just a delivery robot. It has a built-in screen that runs promotions, prompts customers for Google reviews via QR codes, and upsells menu items. It generates revenue while it delivers food.
  • 48-hour deployment. We set it up, train your staff, and you're running within two days.
  • Built for Malaysian conditions. Narrow aisles in kopitiams, busy mamak layouts, cramped cafes. We tested in real Malaysian restaurants, not labs.

Where we are now

FoodLink is actively deploying FL1 robots in restaurants across Malaysia, with expansion into Singapore. Every week we learn something new from real restaurant environments and feed it back into the product.

If you're a restaurant owner dealing with staffing headaches, high labor costs, or just want to see what a robot can do for your business, we'd love to show you.
